Kromfohrländer, a young and friendly breed

Considered one of the youngest breeds in Germany, the Kromfohrländer is a medium-sized pet, ideal for families and homes with limited  space.

Kromfohrländer’s recent origins

The standards for this breed were set in Germany in 1955, thanks to a resident of the Siegen area in Westphalia named Ilse Schleifenbaum. He lived in a place near the one called ‘Krom Fohr’, which would give this animal its name, the Kromfohrländer.

This breed originated shortly after World War II,  descended from the smooth-haired Fox Terrier and the Great griffon of the Vendee, from whom it inherited its affable temperament. Its ancestors are believed to have been regular companion dogs to American troops stationed in Germany during World War II.

The  International Cynological Federation  classifies this breed in group nine of companion animals. It is a  medium-sized dog, whose coat can be presented in both the hard and smooth variety.

Kromfohrländer also has a slight dependence on its owner, so it  prefers to stay at home with family rather than outside in the garden. His strong attachment to  his family also makes him suspicious of strangers.

Alert in nature, it can even serve as a guard dog, despite not facing an aggressive breed. A well-trained and properly socialized specimen will neither bark much nor be shy.

The Kromfohrländer is an intelligent dog that responds to training sessions with positive reinforcement, ie those that reward the animal instead of punishing it for failure. It requires continuous and consistent training  that produces more than satisfactory results.

After training, this breed usually performs well in competitive or agile canine sports,  as it loves to spend time with its owner, with whom it will maintain a special relationship throughout life.
