What are the main dog breeds in England?

We could say that  a good percentage of the dog breeds in England have crossed borders and continents.  Today, they can be found all over the world, regardless of our location. Of the nearly 40 races that exist, it’s a little difficult to choose a few, but we’ll tell you about the most popular or recognized:

1. Beagle

Medium in size, it  is a dog used to track rabbits and hares due to its highly developed sense of smell. They became famous in the Elizabethan Era, as the Queen was a fan of the race. These dogs have large ears, a cloak of up to three colors (white, black and brown) and a black nose. This breed is very calm, cheerful, guardian, intelligent, determined and resolute. This dog is prone to epilepsy, hypothyroidism and overweight.

2. Bull Terrier

It belongs to the Terrier group and is one of England’s dogs par excellence. One of the main features is the triangular-shaped head and the elongated muzzle. He is very active, funny, affectionate, and although they are mostly white, some can be spotted. The care of this dog is simple due to the short coat. Also, it requires a lot of exercise to burn energy.

3. Bulldog

This breed is one of the symbols of England and appeared in the 17th century for fighting (practice banned in 1835). It is “chubby” and has several folds or wrinkles in the mantle. Its head is large compared to its body, it has short, straight fur in three colors (red, white and beige, can also be mottled). The lips are hanging down. In relation to his health, he may suffer respiratory problems.

4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

A royal dog with all the letters. Since the 16th century, this dog has been used as a companion animal by the English court (as seen in several paintings of the time). It is small, lively, active and belongs to the group of water dogs. He borrows the name of King Charles II, a fanatic of the race from the beginning. He must be taken for a walk on a leash because otherwise he will want to follow whatever he sees along the way.

5. Jack Russell Terrier

Another of the best known breeds of dogs in England, but which, nevertheless, had its main development in Australia. Small in size and predominantly white in body (with some brown spots on the ears and face).  He is an alert, independent, agile, strong and resilient terrier. It is normal for you to tin to indicate the location of prey or to want to dig in the ground.

6. English Pointer

It is a breed of hunting dogs named for their ability to “point out” the location of prey. The origins date back to the 17th century, when hunting with a shotgun was common. It is a descendant of the white dog, but it is not known whether it is of the French, English or Spanish variety. He has an exceptional sense of smell, never tires of looking and can run large areas without problems.

7. English setter

Although the origins of the breed date back to the Middle Ages, in France, several specimens were taken to England and crossed with the English pointer. Then other Setters appeared (in Wales, Ireland, etc.). The current species, born in the 19th century, to work in the field, is a medium-sized dog with black and white mottled fur (like a dalmatian, but with long fur).

As for his personality, he  is easy to train, active, friendly, needs continuous company and does not choose a single owner, but gets along well with all his family and close friends. This breed needs patient training due to its somewhat “wild” nature.

8. Norwich Terrier

It was bred to hunt small rodents, has a friendly personality and is chosen as a companion animal. The first specimen was born in East Anglia, in the 19th century, and is an increasingly rare breed to be found outside the country.
