Yellow vomiting in dogs: causes and symptoms

The health of your dog’s digestive system can be affected by several causes. Know what yellow vomit is in dogs and how to treat it.

What exactly does your dog vomit?

The yellow substance (yellow vomit) regurgitated by your pet is nothing but  bile.

This secretion, produced by the liver, is stored in the gallbladder until food digestion begins. When digestion begins, bile is released into the small intestine to continue food processing.

Bile is made up of  water, lecithin, cholesterol, bicarbonate ions and pigments, in addition to bile salts.

When your dog vomits this secretion, it is usually because bile enters the stomach through the small intestine.

This usually happens when your dog  eats foods high in fat or a lot of grass.

The diet of dogs that tend to suffer from these episodes should consist of  foods high in fiber and low in fat, to begin to alleviate symptoms.

Possible pathologies associated with yellow vomiting in dogs

If a change in your pet’s diet doesn’t seem to improve his vomiting, he may have an underlying illness that is causing this symptom. Among the most common in these cases, we have:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders such  as ulcers, parasitic infections and certain types of cancer. Bile acidity can irritate the esophagus and cause ulcers. This can occur in certain breeds such as bulldogs, retrievers and small dogs.
  • Pancreatitis. It is an inflammation of the pancreas , the  organ responsible for producing secretions for the digestive system. The pancreas also produces hormones such as insulin or glucagon. This condition can also occur after eating foods high in fat and result in stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting yellow, which contains bile.
  • Bowel obstructions. Some bones, toys, or fur balls can build up in your pet’s intestines and lead to bowel obstructions. If you suspect your dog may be suffering from an obstruction, go to the nearest 24-hour veterinary emergency service.
  • Allergies. In the case of foods that cause allergies in your pet, it is likely that, after a first ingestion, there will be vomiting that may contain bile. Sometimes this is due to a very abrupt change in your diet and can be progressively corrected. Keep in mind that animals can develop allergies even to the foods they regularly eat.

In any case, the first thing you should do if your dog starts vomiting bile is to  call your veterinarian, who can analyze the symptoms and give an accurate diagnosis.

Try to take it as quickly as possible so that your pet doesn’t get too weak after spending many hours without eating or drinking.
