A German Shepherd dog was rescued by a group of workers who were transported in a small boat along the mythical Volga, the largest and most powerful river in Europe.

Luckily for the dog, the men noticed that something was kicking in the icy water, trying not to sink. As they approached, they noticed the animal, which was trying to support itself and float on a piece of ice.

Then they slowed the ship down – to keep the furry from sinking – and got close enough to grab it by the collar and put it on board.

How is the weather in Yaroslavl, the city where the dog fell into the frozen river

The event took place in the city of Yaroslavl, located 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow, just at the confluence of the Volga and Kótorosl rivers, it is an important economic center that has petrochemical industries and tire and diesel engine factories.

The average annual temperature in Yaroslavl is 4 degrees Fahrenheit and it rains throughout the year. During winter, thermometers can reach 11 degrees below zero.

With these data, it is certain that animals and people are used to withstand the cold and that river waters freeze. But there is always the risk of accidents, which tend to be numerous in the area. This time luck was on the furry side.

Some data on hypothermia in dogs

The dog was rescued before being defeated by exhaustion and before hypothermia could wreak havoc on his body, which would surely lead to his death.

The normal temperature for dogs is between 38.5 and 39.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Hypothermia occurs when the animal’s body cannot maintain a normal temperature, causing a depression of the central nervous system and also affecting:

  • The heart;
  • Blood flow;
  • The breath;
  • The immune system.

And although hypothermia is usually caused by cold temperatures, as in the case of the German Shepherd in our story, in some cases, animals may also suffer from it under normal ambient temperature conditions:

  • Newborn puppies;
  • Small breeds;
  • Animals that are under anesthesia;
  • Animals in old age.

A Russian story with a happy ending

We know that the dog rescued from the Volga is in good health, although the causes that led him to fall into the frozen river are unknown. Most likely, he was strolling around the place when the ice suddenly – as it often does – broke.

Nor is it possible to know who its owners are. But – thinking of the good hearts of the men who rescued him – we conclude that he must have already found a good home where he could forget about the freezing Volga and where he will spend the rest of the Russian winter warm and being well cared for.

And how do we prevent ourselves?
