The komondor, as we said, is characterized by its peculiar coat. It is often confused with the water dog, but they are two different species. He is a shepherd and guardian dog. His coat can be used as a disguise for predators to attack him, thinking he is a sheep.

There are several theories about its origin. On the one hand, it is believed that he arrived in Hungary in the year 896, when Prince Arpad’s tribes settled in the Hungarian steppe.

On the other hand, it is said that it was the Mongols who led the komondor in their invasion of the country in the 13th century.  What is the real theory? It is not known to this day which version is correct, but what is known for sure is that he performs his work as a guardian and pastor very well.

Komondor Characteristics

It is a large, robust looking dog. Its legs are straight, short and very thick. The hind legs are thicker than the forefeet, which makes it easier for him to stand up and attack an intruder who arrives at his home.

The height of females reaches 65 centimeters, while in males it reaches 90 centimeters. Amazing, isn’t it? Its weight varies between 40 and 80 kilos. More than a Great Dane!

Its dreadlocks fur is always white, long and very thick. Some call him a “mop dog” . Even if some dogs of the breed are beige or sandy, don’t be confused, it’s just a color they acquire over time. Its original and the only accepted coat color is white.

Like almost all sheepdogs, the komondor is calm and very patient. However, if it perceives a dangerous situation, this dog becomes a great defender. He won’t mind giving his life for his family or his flock.

Due to the shape of its body, it can defend itself from any predator that tries to attack, including wolves and bears. He is very kind and patient with children and affectionate with his family.

However, he is known to be suspicious of strangers at first. If the stranger shows you that he has good intentions, he will soon be accepted.

It does not have common diseases of the breed, only those that can affect large dogs, such as hip dysplasia and gastric torsion.

However, its coat needs some care. It needs to be carefully monitored as it is a great place for ticks and other parasites. Your eyes and ears need daily hygiene. It is recommended to take him to a hairdresser at least once a month for professional grooming and grooming.
